good morning. >> good morning you to. our major warm-up continues for your sunday afternoon. highs will be 5 to 10 to 12 degrees above yesterday's highs. at this hour sunnier skies outside our doors. less after marine layer. it's a cool start in some areas. i'll have a detail of your afternoon highs coming up. in overnight news, one person is dead after a fight in san jose. just before 1:00 this morning, police were called to a disturbance in the area of monterey highway and bearle avenue. another man who may have been stabbed in the same area was transported to the hospital. officers are checking to see if the two cases are related. oakland police received numerous noise complaints about a large raid. tens of thousands of people

packed the coliseum. it featured more than 20 music acts. callers complaining about the noise described it as the loudest it's ever been at the coliseum but rave attendees say the event stayed fairly peaceful. [indiscernible] >> reporter: you didn't see any conflicts? >> i was here with a whole bunch of friends. it really was an amazing experience. >> no one under the age of 18 was allowed. the rave ran from 6:00 last night till 2:00 this morning. people came from as far away as southern california. teams from the f.b.i. and a.t.f. could arrive today to investigate a fire at the private law office of vallejo mayor osby davis. davis is a high profile figure. the fire broke out around 1:30 saturday morning at the building davis shares with

another attorney. police are calling the fire very suspicious. i'm not going to go into whether the mayor has protection or not. obviously if there is a degree of concern for his saved, we as an organization, police department, will certainly do what we can to address that issue. >> there have been random acts of vandalism but nothing compared to the damage caused by the fire. client records were also destroyed. firefighters are looking into the cause of a massive fire that destroyed a warehouse in san jose. it happened just about 2:30 yesterday afternoon on 10th and heading streets. firefighters say the fire was so intense, they couldn't enter the building and focused on protecting nearby apartments. >> it's kind of depressing. we used to looked at that building and wonder what could have become of it. now it's just gone. >> investigators are still trying to determine who owned the abandoned building. it was last rental steered to allied container corporation. pge says a squirrel is responsible for knock be out power to almost 11,000

customers in the oakland and berkley hills. the utility says the animal got into some equipment at an outdoor substation around 5:00 last night. power was restored to most customers in about 90 minutes, but that was not soon enough for some college avenue restaurants hoping to capitalize on the football game at cal. >> this was a huge night for us. last year cal was in san francisco. we lost some of that business, although it wasn't that bad but we were really happy and excited to get the regular saturday night visits back, especially on a cal football day. >> the outage affected customers north of broadway terrace and east of claremont avenue in oakland and west of grizzly park boulevard in berkley. a restaurant in alamo is holding a fund-raiser tonight for the family of fallen chp officer kenyan youngstrom. he was shot and killed during a traffic stop on september 5. he's survived by his wife and four children. a fallen hero's group is

helping organize the fund- raiser. the dinner dance begins at 6:00 tonight. a concert is going to benefit businesses destroyed by a fire in san francisco last month. the four-alarm fire broke out on ocean avenue. it was back on august 7. firefighters encountered dangerous conditions and experienced a backdrift. nine businesses were damaged causing $3 million worth of damage. the businesses, three of them, were destroyed and will have to be torn down. starting tomorrow, shoppers in san francisco must bring reusable bags to the store. the city's bag ordinance goes into effect. they must charge customers a dime for each bag unless the shopper brings their own. that bag law kicks in for restaurants and bakeries next year. san francisco mayor ed lee is scheduled to make welcoming remarks at oracle's 2012 conference tonight. more than 50,000 people are expected to tearnldz the event

-- attended the event in san francisco. oracle's c.e.o. is expected to announce a revamp of the company's database system at that event. oracle is also expected to reveal new servers for computing. you may want to check the status of your flight if you're flying out of san francisco international airport today. one of the primary runways is closed and that could cause some delays. this is the final weekend of the runway closures for work to install new lights and safety features. airport officials say air traffic should return to normal by tomorrow morning. today is a spare the air day. officials are asking people to avoid driving or using gas powered equipment in order to cut down on unhealthy air pollution. people are also being asked to take public transit or use other alternatives such as carpooling. so if yesterday you're thinking to yourself the weather is great but would like it a smidge warmer?

guess what? >> today is your lucky day. we'll warm up over the inland areas nearing 100 degrees in some cases. along the coast a modest warm- up expected. we do have clouds hucking the coastline this morning and just -- hugging the coast line this morning in just inside the bay. the marine layer, we're talking about a thousand feet right now. giving you a live look there at just how shallow it s. we'll see mostly sunny skies today along the coastline. partly cloudy by the afternoon. mid-60s to 70s for you. if you like it hot, you are in luck. temperatures this morning have slipped back into the 40s in some cases. a very nice overnight cooling has allowed that possibility of a heat advisory for today to be canceled by the national weather service. so that is actually some good news. we continue with the warming trend. today again the hottest spots nearing 100 degrees. tomorrow will be the hottest day. so our back-to-work monday will be quite toasty in some areas. mike mentioned this.

pittsburg. santa cruz, going to be a warm day at the boardwalk or if headed to the beach, 90 degrees for redwood city. 75 in san francisco. low to mid-70s expected for the pacifica as well as half moon bay. again determining how soon we see the clouds burn away. your extended forecast, hottest day comes tomorrow. a tad cooler on tuesday. it's really not until wednesday or thursday we begin to feel the bigger cooldown. back into the mid- to upper 80s by thursday. between now and then going to be quite warm in some areas, even reaching the low 100s by tomorrow afternoon for the inland areas. great beach weather. mid- to upper 70s along the coast. back to the desk. a heads up for drivers who take the san mateo bridge. caltrans has announced plans to shut down the bridge on the last two weekends in october for repairs. the agency says the closure will allow crews to permanently fix a crack that was found during a routine inspection back in 2010. the closure of the bridge is expected to result in increased traffic on some of the other bay area bridges.

good morning to you. looks a little foggy out there this morning. but we have plenty of sunshine in store for today. temperatures will warm over yesterday's highs. new this morning, a mob of 25,000 ride es have torched buddhist temples and homes over a photo of the kuran posted on facebook. it happened in bangladesh. at least five temples and dozens of homes have burned. the rioters claim a buddhist man from the area uploaded that photo. a child was killed and three others injured in a grenade attack at a sunday school class in kenya. police say supporters of the somali militant group pay be behind today's violence. churches have been the site of several attacks. in libya, hundreds of people have turned over weapons from the uprising that toppled moammar qaddafi.

more than 200 weapons have been collected, including a tank, heat seeking missiles and ammunition. it comes aft september 11 attack on the american consulate in benghazi that killed ambassador chris stevens. the weapons collected are just a fraction of the arms taken from qaddafi's arsenals during the rebellion. to americans were killed in an attack in afghanistan. it happened at a check point just west of kabul. they do not have the exact details of what happened but some witnesses say an afghan soldier shot at americans who then returned fire. during the ensuing battle, a mortar shell killed an american soldier and an american contractor. officials say the afghan who fired first was killed in the shootout. 2,000 american service members have now died in afghanistan since the u.s.-led invasion in 2001. the youngest prisoner at guantanamo bay has been returned to canada after spending a decade in custody. omar gutter was 15 years old when he was captured in a

bombed out afghan compound and taken into u.s. custody. in 2010 he pleaded guilty to murdering a u.s. soldier as part of a plea deal, he returned to canada. authorities say he was taken to afghanistan by his father who is said to be a senior al qaeda member who prince advertised his son to -- apprenticed his son to a group of bomb makers. the navy's newest destroyer will be commissioned. u. snches s. michael murphy cruzed into the harbor. it's neamed after a navy -- named after a navy seal killed in 2009. the destroyer was built at the bath rye ron work dms maine. -- iron works in maine. california has become the first state in the country to ban therapies that attempt to change the sexual orientation of minors. yesterday governor jerry brown signed the bill banning mental

health practitioners from performing preparative therapy on minors. it's been labeled dangerous and abusive and could raise the risk of depression and suicide in young people. in election 2012 news, we're three days away from the first presidential debate. president obama will head from washington to nevada. he has a campaign stop at a las vegas high school. he is going to stay in nevada before traveling to denver on wednesday. republican challenger mitt romney is spending the weekend cramming for the debate. political analysts say he needs a strong showing with recent polls showing him losing ground to the president in battleground states. the university of denver is preparing to host that debate. it is going to focus on domestic policy and it will be mod rated by jim lehrer. two more presidential debates will be held on the 16th and 22. you can of course watch those debates live here on ktvu

channel 2. coverage begins at 6:00. while the election is on tuesday, november 6, some voters have already cast their ballots. 32 states and the district of columbia offer some form of early voting. iowa began last week. ohio starts tuesday. volunteers from the obama and romney camps are canvassing neighborhoods looking for early votes and it's an important strategy because it allows those parties to bank votes more than a month before election day. congressional roles are forcing republican vice presidential nominee paul ryan to donate a gift he received out on the campaign trail. he attended a banquet for hunters yesterday in columbus, ohio. the u.s. sportsmans alliance presented him with a hand grade american made shotgun. >> i've got one from my grandfather, a 20 gauge. you know what's great about these? the downward ejection so lefties, this is your gun. righties this is your gun. >> ryan says he will donate the

and now, something extra -- for you. . a michigan woman still on welfare after winning the lottery died of an overdose. she was found dead yesterday morning at a home near detroit. she received nationwide attention for collecting welfare benefits after winning a $735,000 lottery prize. friends say she was addicted to drugs including zanax. >> just went down the wrong path. when she got the money, the freedom, felt like she could do whatever she wanted. some people just don't have the will power. >> in june clayton pleaded no contest to fraud and repaid $5500. michigan officials say she did not inform the state about her lottery windfall. the controversy led to a new state law requiring lottery administrators to inform the

state about new winners. survivors of the movie theater massacre in colorado may be returning to the scene of the shooting. on thursday aurora's district attorney sent an e-mail to victims and family members of the 12 people skilled asking -- killed asking if they would like to visit the site. some of the survivors have expressed interest in returning to the theater for closure. >> it's not going to be pretty but i don't want my perception of the event of the theater the place to live in my head and for it to be bigger than it actually was. >> the theater has been closed since the july 20 shooting. last week it was announced the theater would be undergoing renovations and would most likely reopen next year. the oak creek community is continuing to renewt -- to renight after the sikh shooting in august. we look at the benefit held this weekend in honor of the victims. >> reporter: oak creek high

year-old chloie leverette and her 7-year-old half brother gauge danielle died in sunday's fire. they haven't been able to find the children's remains. >> at this point we don't know but, you know, we would like to see closure as well. >> the children lived in that house with their grandparents who did die in that fire. authorities also say the children are not with their mother who has been investigated in the past by child services. the trial against pope benedict's former butler reconvenes on tuesday. 46-year-old paolo gabriele will take the stand himself. he's accused of stealing vatican documents and leaking them to a journalist. the trial started yesterday in front of a three-judge vatican court. prosecutors say gabriele has confessed to the crime saying he wanted to shock the church by exposing corruption. although he faces up to four years in prison if convicted, he has already asked the pope for a pardon. serial killer wesley

i'm claudine wong. shoppers will have to start bringing reusable bags pretty much where they go. we have pore on the new ordinance that takes effect tomorrow. >> reporter: today a bag like this is free if you want to get it at retailer like a hardware store or supermarket or some place like that around san francisco but starting tomorrow, a bag like this will cost you a dime. starting tomorrow, october 1, the city's new checkout bag ordinance goes into effect. all retailers except restaurants have to switch from plastic bags to paper or compostable bags. if customers want a bag, retailers will be charging 10 cents each. the city's department of the environment is overseeing the changeover and hopes the new rules will encourage customers to change their habits and bring reusable bags when they shop. the dime surcharge is aimed at helping the retailers offset their increased costs associated with switching from plastic to paper or compostable bag. restaurants and takeout food places are exempt for right now. they will be included in the

plastic bag ban next year. we're live in san fran, ktvu channel 2 news. family and friends of an oakland man shot and killed by police are demanding more details about his death. >> justice for alex. >> 18-year-old alan bluford was killed when he ran from police. the following day police said a gun believed to have been the suspect's had not been fired. instead the officer had shot himself in the foot. police say there are witnesses who saw the suspect point a gun at police. the family is suing the city. the trial begins tomorrow for the woman accused of killing nursing student michele lei. she disappeared from kaiser permanente in hayward on may 27, 2011. her body was found a couple months later on september 17. jezelle esteban is accused in

her murder. the trial is expected to last a month. thousands of people turned out to hear nobel peace laureate aung san suu kyi speak in san francisco. the myanmar opposition leader spoke to a crowd of 5,000 people at the university of san francisco yesterday. she asked them for support for her country in its path to democracy. she spent 15 years under house arrest but is now trying to bring about change as a member of the country's parliament. >> our country is now on the verge of a new path. i have to keep reminding people that we're just about to start out, that we're not yet along the way. >> she received the key to the city and an honorary doctorate from usf at last night's event. she says she hopes to reach out to the large burmese ex-patriot community during her trip to the united states. you should expect to pay more for beef and pork next year. butcher shops are already warning customers about higher

prices. the reasons include the extended drought and rising feed costs. ranchers say last month the draught forced a higher -- drought forced a higher than usual number of animals to slaughter. soy has gone up $2 a pound in just two months. >> what happened the last increase, people went from eating a lot of primals to new york strips, porter houses. they went to eating secondary cuts. >> one rancher is charging a dollar a pound more for sausage, pork chops and bacon. she plans to switch from corn- based hog feed to plant-based feed to save money. owners of dozens of miniature horses have found a temporary home for their animals. the owners fell behind on their mortgage payments. then last week they received an eviction notice saying they had to get out and the animals with them by wednesday morning. yesterday they began loading the horses for a home in bow day go and all the horses should be moved by tonight. it's not clear how long the

animals will be allowed to stay in their new home. after three years of construction a new medical center in castro valley is inching closer to completion. when the new center opens its doors december 1, it will boast a new trauma center, new ct scansers and an expanded emergency room. the hospital also has new surgical rooms and offers three dimensional breast imjing for -- imaging for mammograms. >> it's time to transition to new environment and technology. >> the medical center costs $320 million to build. u.s. health officials are reminding people it's flu shot time. yesterday kaiser opened up drive-thru flu clinics in union city and fremont for members. the same clinics will be offered next weekend. this year's vaccine contains the same strains at last year's plus two new ones. health officials say every year about 20% of americans come down with the flu. the proposal for a new basketball arena in san francisco is receiving both praise and opposition.

about 50 people attended a community meeting yesterday to discuss the golden state warriors' plan to build an arena at piers 30 and 32. opponents are concerned about traffic, crime and the financial costs to the the city. but supporters say the project will bring much needed jobs while renovating the city's eastern water upon. -- >> water frn. >> it's a well -- waterfront. >> it is a well managed project because there are heavy hitters behind it. it's all good. >> the problem is they're building it out on a pier blocking people's not only views but the public's access, tourists' access. >> the warriors say public transit will ease congestion. the commission study shows 68% of san franciscans favor an arina in the city. >> the national hockey league and its players are expected to talk again today in hopes of involving the labor dispute. the teams met for four hours yesterday. it was a second straight day of talks. while they discussed some money issues, they avoided the main sticking point of revenue sharing. with the regular season
